Tutorial: Footie's That Fit

I love footie pajamas- they have the promise of warm cozy fuzzies… They are cute, soft and are an outfit all in one! What’s not to love?
The only problem I have is I can’t find the perfect size. If they fit well in the leg, my baby can romp around the house fine- but when she wants uppies, they ride up, making it uncomfortable for her and sometimes triggering the step reflex which causes her to pop her seat.
Luckily, there is a solution! All you need is big footies, scissors, elastic, a sewing machine and 15 minutes. (You could hand sew as well, but I think a machine would be the best option!)
In a nut shell, we are going to cut the big foot down on the footies, and then add elastic to pull up any extra fabric, making it easier for Baby to be mobile!
For reference, I used a 24 month size for my 13 month old, who is 30 inches, 21lbs and leggy.
First: Cut the foot of the footies down to size. Use a pair of fitting jammies as a template, mark on the footies the correct size. Zig zag stitch once or twice right over your mark, then cut right along the stitches, leaving no seam allowance.

Second: Add the elastic in the legs to cinch up any loose fabric when Baby is not being worn.
Cut two pieces of elastic, about 6 inches each. In the leg that has no zipper, try to get it down as far as you can and anchor that end of the elastic with a pin, about 2 inches from the side seam. (if you really like to sew, you could use a seam ripper and open this leg, then sew it shut again once the elastic is in place). On the leg with the zipper, match how far down the elastic goes, and pin.

Sew the elastic along each leg, pulling it tight as you go, using a straight stitch.

NOTE:  Having done multiple of these now, I will say the more leg you have to cinch up, the farther down and more elastic you would  use. For example, for the biggest pair of footies my daughter had, I went about 3 inches from the heel and used 7 inches of elastic. In the picture below, I went about 8 inches from the heel and used 5 inches of elastic.

And that's it! Perfectly fitting footie jammies for babywearing!

Learn Along with BWI of CLE

Coming up in January 2016!

In addition to "Try It Tuesday", BWI of Cleveland is going to kick off the New Year by adding two new weekly learning events to the Facebook group.

Did you ever want to learn all about woven wraps or the different types of soft structured carriers (SSC's)? If so, be sure to check out the Facebook group starting Sunday, January 24, 2016 for "Sunday Specifics". Every Sunday we will detail a different carrier! In addition to woven wraps and SSC's we will look at ring slings, Mei Tai's, and pouch slings to name a few and included in these posts will be pictures of carriers available through our Lending Library!. We will also detail specific SSC's (Lenny Lamb, Tula, etc.), as well as specific Mei Tai's (Baby Hawk, BB Tai, etc.) in upcoming weeks to help you decide what carrier might work the best and which one to look for in the Lending Library!

The second weekly event that will be on the Facebook group starting Wednesday, January 27, 2016 is "Woven Wednesdays". Each week will feature a different carry to learn using a woven wrap (with great introductory carries in the beginning!!).  Suggested wrap lengths will be given as well as links to tutorials to help facilitate learning! We hope that you will share photos with us every week!

BWI of Cleveland looks forward to the New Year and the start of these new events! Please feel free to interact and most importantly...HAVE FUN!!

Nichole joined our volunteer team this past November. She is mom to Lucas (born 06.2015), wife to Ian, and full time scientist at a University in Cleveland. She became interested in Babywearing while pregnant with her son. She started out with a Boba stretch wrap, and an Ergo SSC. Not being 100% sure on how to use the Ergo with a newborn led her to an internet search for a local Babywearing group. She found the Cleveland chapter and as they say, “the rest is history”. Nichole's current favorite way to carry her son is using a woven wrap. She will volunteering at the Elyria meeting and is excited to help where needed as her schedule permits!

Winter Wearing Deal!

A few days ago I started seeing posts about a Babywearing hoodie at Target. Wait. What? Target makes Babywearing hoodies?

Apparently it is meant to be stylish (who doesn't love a nice draft on their back?!) And found in the Junior's Department. Sorry kids! These hoodies are about to be made uncool by all of us Babywearing mamas!

The hoodie comes in two colors- black and grey and can be found here for $19.99. Open Back Leisure Top. It is also available in plus sizes!

The opening in the back is perfect for back carries! How cute do our BWI Volunteers look?!

Another bonus: The hoodie pockets swing front and back so they are functional in a front carry! You can put the hood between you and baby, like a cowl neck for front carries.

This little man approves!

The back opening is large enough for both mama and baby to pop through for a front carry, like educator Wendy did with her teeny baby Ada. This way there is no fabric obstructing her newborns face. The same back opening is the perfect size to accommodate a toddler.

The hood can also be used as a nursing cover. Stay warm while feeding your littles!

This $20 hoodie is a great bargain to help make winter wearing comfortable AND affordable!

Have you snagged up a Target "Babywearing Hoodie"? If so please share them with us on Facebook and by tagging @bwiofcleveland in Instagram to be featured on our account! #bwicleveland

Dress Up Fun: Wearing in Costumes

Doctor Frankenstein, The Bride and wearing The Monster!

October is here! Time for all things fall, and for many that means Halloween festivities!

A Pirate and her Parrot, a Couple Theives and their Loot, Popcorn and Cola, Adventure Time!

Your baby may not care about candy just yet, but extra snuggles from your little one are always a treat! Babywearing could be just the trick you need to create a fun costume idea that isn't lacking in the snuggle department! Not only can babywearing costumes be fun, but here in Ohio they can be very helpful at protecting your little one from the elements. Having your child "close enough to kiss" means you can make sure they aren't getting too chilly when those icy Halloween winds are blowing! If it begins raining while you are out in costume, babywearing means one umbrella has you both covered!
From Game of Thrones-Mabel is bran (minus her wig because she wouldn't leave it on), Austin is hodor, and Shanna is Osha (Ergo Baby Carrier) and then we have Karyn carrying her Captain America (Kokadi Merlin Stars)

Utilizing a babywearing costume can allow you to easily volunteer at an older child's class party while keeping your baby safe and out of mischief...but still letting you join in the fun by dressing up!

Alicia as a web with her black spider

We all know how anxious we can get on Halloween night when the streets are filled with children and many adults are out for a night on the town. Babywearing is a wonderful way to make sure your child is always near a caregiver and safe from wandering into the streets or getting lost in a crowd.

Tracy and her Tootsie Roll and also a Pumpkin and Ladybug (pet costumes overtop a mei tai)

There are many ways to create a fun babywearing costume! You could use the print on your wrap or carrier as inspiration for your costume, you could cover your carrier with fabric, and I've heard pet costumes fit beautifully over many soft structured carriers! From Yoda on Luke Skywalker's back, to an owl in a tree, a dalmatian puppy with a fire hydrant or a beekeeper with a bee...the possibilities are endless!

Alicia wearing her Pink Puppy (mommy's shirt provides a built-in candy bucket!)  and Karyn with her spider and flower (Moby and Seven Slings Pouch) and also with her bumble bee and flower (bee in KP and flower in a Wrapsody Hybrid  Stretch)

Brittany as "Mama Kangaroo and her Roo" (Moby Wrap) and Merideth as "The Solar System Revolving Around the Sun" (Wrap is Oscha Starry Night Raven)

All of the pictures in today's blog post were submitted by our own members!  We have so many creative folks in our Chapter. If you still can't decide- guess what?!  We have a Pinterest Board for that!  Come and get inspired, there are SO many incredible ideas and fun to be had!

Thank you to our newest member of our Social Media Team, Alanna Mlakar for today's 102 Topic of the month!  Aside from the hard work she does at our Monthly Instructional Meetings, she is blogging for us and also is a Pinner on our awesome Pinterest Account.
